pushing single-family home builders farther away from the amenities that make these urban areas attractive. Eventually, this progression reaches a limit in which commuting back to these amenities is too costly. At this point, the greenfield land is effectively “built out.”
Congress should prioritize any and all legislative support for the single-family home … American homeowners and citizens know best what is in the interest of their neighborhoods and communities. Localities rather than the federal government must have the final say in zoning laws and regulations, and a conservative Administration should oppose any efforts to weaken single-family zoning.

The mass purchase of affordable houses — on the market for about 400,000 euros ($490,000) — set off a public firestorm and highlights the growing tension over the squeeze in urban housing and the role of large investors.
Authorities broadly welcomed their arrival for stabilizing the sector and replacing local landlords who were decimated when the fallout from 2008 financial crash dried up their funding. But in the media, investment firms have been regularly portrayed as “vultures” for buying debt and property at depressed prices and crowding out private buyers.
Even so, there are few alternative sources for that kind of capital, according to Ronan Lyons, an economist at Trinity College in Dublin who compiles the Daft.ie report on the Irish rental market.

Formal shared housing - also known as co-living when it refers to tenants from higher income levels - differs in that a specialized firm vets applicants and typically deals with utility bills so tenants have just one monthly payment.
The rise of this type of housing has also allowed companies to construct or refurbish buildings specifically for this use.
The idea is not a new one but it is seeing a resurgence in U.S. cities as both residents and housing providers grapple with an ongoing shortage of affordable units. (..)
"So long as the market, circumscribed as it may be by public policy, is the principle machinery allocating urban space among competitive use, this interaction will be the dominant city shaping force in our society." [Wingo, Transportation and Urban Land, 1961]
